There are four modes of transportation in the world shipping market: liner transportation, charter transportation, NVOCC transportation and multimodal transportation. The characteristics of liner transportation are fixed time, fixed route, fixed port sequence and fixed rate. Chartered transportation means irregular transportation, which means that there is no fixed route and timetable. According to the supply and demand of the shipping market, it can be operated on any route. The freight rate is still negotiable and suitable for bulk cargo transportation. A non-vessel carrier refers to a carrier that is engaged in regular operations, but does not own or operate the ships required for maritime transportation. The NVOCC is the carrier relative to the actual shipper, but is also the shipper relative to the actual carrier identity of. For the cargo owner or shipper, choosing an appropriate transportation method depends on whether the freight forwarder is proficient in the following aspects:

a. The regularity of transportation services.

if the goods must be shipped out within a certain fixed time, liner transportation is a right choice;

b. Transport speed;

c. Transportation cost.

When the transportation time and transportation speed are not the main factors considered by the shipper or the cargo owner, the transportation price becomes the most important;

d. The reliability of transportation.

Before choosing the shipping company to be entrusted for freight, you should check its strength and reputation to reduce the possibility of maritime fraud and becoming a victim;

e. Operating status and responsibilities.

On the surface, a shipowner has ownership of the ship, but in fact he mortgaged the ship to the bank and became an operator through an operating contract with the bank. This will have a negative impact on the interests of cargo owners when disputes over cargo transportation are brought to court in the future.

3. Freight forwarders should understand the adaptability of different types of ships to the cargo of the owner.

As a freight forwarder, you must understand ship characteristics, such as ship’s registration country and tonnage, gross registered tonnage (GRT), net registered tonnage (NRT), bulk cellar, packaging cellar, gross deadweight tonnage (DWT), load line, ship class and other aspects of knowledge. The third-generation container ship has a container carrying capacity of 2000-3000 TEU and can pass through the Panama Canal, so it is also called a Panamax ship. The fourth-generation and larger tank-carrying ships are not suitable for passing through the Barna Canal, and are often referred to as super post-panamaxes.

4. First-class freight forwarders should be familiar with shipping regulations.

In addition to understanding the "Hague Rules", "Wisby Rules", and "Hamburg Rules", you should also properly understand the shipping regulations and port operating practices of the country where the goods are exported or the destination port.

The main shipping documents include bills of lading, sea waybills, manifests, invoices, bills of lading, packing lists, port station receipts, chief mate receipts, etc.

In import and export trade, customs clearance is a traditional function of freight forwarders. In the dual relationship between freight forwarders and customs authorities and their customers, the legal position of freight forwarders varies from country to country, but customs agents are usually authorized by the government. The customer (that is, the owner of the cargo should consider the identity of the freight forwarder as a customs agent, and whether it has the ability to protect the responsibilities of both the customer and the customs authority in the process of performing its duties. The freight forwarder has the formalities for export and departure, bonded storage, inland customs clearance, etc. The ability to operate the port procedures is very important. In addition, the lower freight rate that freight forwarders can provide is also an important factor to consider. Freight forwarders are mainly closely related to liner rates.
